THE WILD ONE (1953)

O SELVAGEN, DER WILDE, IL SELVAGIO,SALVAJE THE WILD ONE TRAILER (1953) The Wild One is a 1953 outlaw biker film. It is remembered for Marlon Brando’s portrayal of the gang leader Johnny Stabler as a juvenile delinquent, dressed in a leather jacket and driving a 1950 Triumph Thunderbird 6T. Acting opposite of Brando was Lee Marvin as a rival gang leader. This low-budget production had Brando playing a rebel without a cause two years before James Dean. The film version was based on a January, 1951 short story in Harper’s Magazine “The Cyclists’ Raid” by Frank Rooney that was published in book form as part of “The Best American Short Stories 1952.” The story took a cue from an actual biker street party on the Fourth of July weekend in 1947 in Hollister, California that was elaborately trumped up in Life Magazine (dubbed the Hollister riot) with staged photographs of wild motorcycle outlaw revellers. The Hollister event is now celebrated annually. In the film, the town is located somewhere in California. Deemed scandalous and dangerous, the film was banned by the British Board of Film Censors from showing in the United Kingdom for fourteen years. Its first UK public showing, to a mostly Rocker audience being at the then famous 59 Club of Paddington in London. It is notable that current rock group Black Rebel Motorcycle Club got their name from the name of Brando’s motorcycle gang, although one of the bikers calls the gang “Black Rebels Motorcycle Club”. Yet another example of a trailer completely skewing the film’s meaning…No wonder people think this is a “totally crap, dated old movie” (*cough*). They expect to see one thing, and get the opposite.

This movie is the reason the Beatles are named the Beatles. The Beatles’ first bass player Stu Sutcliffe (who died before the Beatles got famous) was a huge Marlon Brando fan. He watched the scene in this movie where Lee Marvin says to Brando, “All the beetles have missed you.” “Beetles” was slang for “motorcycle girls.” Sutcliffe told John Lennon their group should be named the Beetles, and John added the “a” (for “beat”) and the name “Beatles” was born. (Info from THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY book.)

Everyone in this dated film was too old, especially the bisexual Brando.

  14. HerkybirdC130 says:

As for him being old for the part, most bikers are not nor were they young kids. Actually Lee Marvin’s character looks even older.

My mother complaned to me that my father took her to see this movie more times than she could count. One night after seeing it they took a spill on the scooter when she was pregnant with me. Didn’t know it at the time. She was just scuffed up a bit and good ole dad broke all five toes on his right foot. My father was the last surviving origanal member of the Jolly Rogers MC when he died. The club is still trying to get his patch back.
