How did John Steinbeck incorporate his biography into his stories?

Just like the question says, how did Steinbeck include any biographical information into his stories?

Is East of Eden one story or many short stories?

I’m 50 pages into the book and it seems like each chapter is about new characters with a completely new story.
Also, what did you think of it? So far I’m not lovin it.
